Learn How to Practice Jazz the Right Way — Jazz Etudes Explained

You and I are not geniuses — we need to practice what we want to play when improvising. If we don’t, we’re just guessing or noodling… and everyone knows it, including you!

When I listen to the greats — Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Chet Baker, or Louis Armstrong — scat singing, you can hear it clearly: they are literally singing what they hear.

Can you do that yet? If not, the answer is simple: practice vocabulary.

That’s the whole point of my jazz etudes. You could dive into transcriptions from Lee Morgan, Clark Terry, Blue Mitchell, or Clifford Brown, but for many intermediate players, those solos are extremely virtuosic.

My etudes are different. They contain the same authentic language I stole from these great players, but arranged so that intermediate students can play them and sound real.

Inside these etudes, you’ll practice snippets of vocabulary that build fundamental skills for jazz improvisation:

Here’s how I use this in practice:

Play through the etudes, and find the parts that resonate most with you.

Practice them until you don’t need to read them anymore — ASSIMILATE.

Apply them in different keys and over different jazz standards — deeper ASSIMILATION.

Start creating your own phrases using the vocabulary you’ve learned — INNOVATE.

A very important note: learn the chord changes to the standards you want to improvise over. Without knowing the harmony, you can’t apply everything you’re practicing.

Eventually, once you’ve internalised the changes and the vocabulary from etudes, transcriptions, and solos, you will be able to improvise authentically like your heroes.
