At first, Popper's 16th Etude didn't seem overly exciting to me. Over time, however, I realized that this piece, when played with inspiration, is really beautiful to listen to. As always with Popper, it is the multitude of almost ingenious harmonic events that can be emphasized and that one should be guided by in order to make the music rich in colors. My aim was again to create a musical interpretation that hopefully makes you forget a little that this is “only” a technical exercise piece. (Actually, I believe everything ought to be played in as musical way as possible.)
To me Popper 16 has a narrative character and the printed accents in this etude should be seen more as a subtle indication of harmonically important notes than in the Beethovenian manner, otherwise the music suffers.
Towards the end, however, where I was looking for more brilliance, I played four accents strongly.
The main technical difficulty for me is the rapid bow changes over several strings, where you have to “lever” quickly and precisely. It is also not trivial for the left hand to achieve good intonation at certain spots. Overall, however, it is probably not the most difficult etude in this collection. Perhaps it is one of the more challenging pieces in the book to play by heart, that could be the case. It probably has to do with the many fast notes.
