Andy: Hiking the WAVE!

North Coyote Butte/The WAVE is a rock/sandstone formation on the Utah/Arizona border. The Dreamland Tour Company is based in Kanab, Utah. They were able to purchase me the required permit. The permits are very difficult to get. It's sheer luck that I got one. Some people have waited YEARS to get one! Using the tour company is NOT a requirement to get a permit. But for a fee of $20, Dreamland tried and succeeded in getting me a permit (end of October, 2025/midweek). I did not want to hike solo, so I went on their tour. For permit info, see the BLM's (Bureau of Land Management) web site for North Coyote Buttes. To obtain a permit within a few days, you must be within 50 miles of Kanab. That's another reason why I used Dreamland to get my permit.
Our guide (Ben) was very knowledgeable, plus he was considerate of my advanced age. I highly recommend Dreamland.
HEAVY fines ($100,000 and possible 6 months in prison) if you hike the WAVE without the permit. Our group encountered several permit monitors on the hike. Even during the government shutdown. So don't risk it.
This hike was 6.4 miles, round trip. Temperature was 60 degrees Fahrenheit on the afternoon of Oct. 29, 2025.
It's a dirt road to reach the trailhead. Can be very muddy after rain. Dreamland uses 4 wheel drive vehicles.
