Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province has symbolically crossed the Zambezi River ahead of the Ncwala Traditional Ceremony scheduled for next week.
Chief Mpezeni, accompanied by Ngoni warriors, performed the symbolic crossing around 11:00 hours in an event marked by pomp and splendour.
The crossing of the Zambezi signifies the historic pilgrimage of the Ngoni people from South Africa, having fled the Mfecane war.
The Ngoni people first crossed the Zambezi River in Feira, Zambia, in 1835.
