Arcus Foundation 2013 Annual Report: Social Justice and Conservation Partners Reflect on Work

You'll meet Anastasia Smirnova, a Russian activist who stood up against anti-gay and lesbian measures in the country, and Felipe Souza-Rodriguez of United We Dream, who tells the story of his arrival in the U.S. from Brazil and who recounts how he pushed for acceptance of his immigrant and gay identity.

The video also features grantees from the foundation's Great Apes Program, which aims to achieve conservation and respect for bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans by ensuring that resilient populations of these species are protected from extinction and living in habitats that are governed in a sustainable, just, and holistic manner; and that apes in captivity are cared for in accredited sanctuaries and are not exploited for entertainment or invasive research. You'll meet Emmanuel de Merode, chief warden of the 3,000-square-mile Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sivha Mbake of Fauna & Flora, who inspires us with stories of her life and work.

Guiding both programs is the belief that humans can live in harmony with one another and the natural world, and that respect for diversity among peoples and in nature is essential to a positive future for the planet and all its inhabitants.
