Robert specializes in modern and modern Japanese literature, and is particularly interested in Chinese literature in the 19th century (late Edo period to early Meiji period) and the literary genres, arts, media, and thoughts that lead to it. Born in New York City. Graduated from the University of California, Berkeley (BA 1981). Completed the doctoral course at the Department of East Asian Languages ​​and Cultures, Harvard University, Doctor of Letters (MA 1984, Ph.D. 1992).

Robert came to Japan in 1985 as a research student at the Faculty of Letters, Kyushu University. After working as a full-time lecturer at the same department (1987, National Institute of Japanese Literature) and an assistant professor at the National Institute of Japanese Literature (1995), he became an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo in 2000 (Comparative Literature Comparative Culture Course [Graduate School], Interdisciplinary Japanese Culture Theory [Late Course of the Faculty of Liberal Arts], National Institute of Japanese Literature and Chinese Literature (1st course of the same department)). Professor at the same graduate school since 2007. Appointed director of the National Institute of Japanese Literature in April 2017. He has been in his current position since April 2021.
