Dan Abrams was the general manager of MSNBC and also an anchor for that network. Now he is the chief legal affairs anchor for ABC News. He is also the host of both Sixty Days In and Live PD, some of the highest rated shows on the A&E network.
Dan Abrams, upcoming book is called Lincoln’s Last Trial: The Murder Case that Propelled Him to the Presidency. This was Lincoln’s last trial before his presidency, a murder case that was one of the first recorded in a transcript (at Lincoln’s request).
At the time, Lincoln was already a national celebrity in the wake of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, in the running for the Republican nomination that would change history, and so the stakes were incredibly high; a loss would have ruined his political career. But, he won.
This would have been a remarkable story just left at that, but one change Lincoln made upon returning to Illinois after his famous debates was to start having transcripts made of his trials; in fact he brought the same stenographer with him to take the notes. And that’s left us with one of the most pristine records of a vital, mostly unknown moment in our history.
