Jordanian Highlands and Their Interregional and Diachronic Embedment,
as Seen from Basta and Ba`ja"

The Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B Megasite Phenomenon of the
Transjordanian Highlands (2nd half of the 8th Millennium BCE) turned
out to be a prosperous episode in complex and supra-regionally linked
shifting socio-economic, land-use and migration dynamics. It cannot be
approached anymore from an isolated and rather regional perspective. A
diachronic update of the phenomenon is presented, stressing the role
of the pastoral-venatorial communities in the Eastern steppes and the
Final PPNB(PPNC) transformations. Special attention receives questions
on how Middle PPNB-PPNC translocations and transformations relate and
how socio-economic adaptations and diversification helped to secure
and promote productive lifeways during the 8th and 7th millennium BCE.
