Hazel the Highland Hedgehog

This hedgehog story will teach pupils that it is perfectly okay to sometimes feel afraid and nervous. It is a heart-warming tale that shows that everybody has worries. And in this sense, no one is ever the only one feeling things this way.

Hazel the Hedgehog is worried about fitting in with other woodland creatures, which will certainly be relatable for a lot of young children who might be intimidated by a school environment. With the help of Tavish the Tawny Owl, however, she is able to realize that others feel this way too, and therefore she isn’t alone.

What happens in this hedgehog story?
Hazel is a hedgehog who is comfortable living in the bushes in the Highlands. She sleeps during the day, and at night time she is intimidated by two characters: Fergus the Fox and Bobby the Badger. Because of this, she hides and avoids doing the things a hedgehog would normally do. One evening, she meets Tavish the Tawny Owl who tells her:

“I know that you are scared and that is OK; we all get frightened sometimes”.

Hazel then learns that Fergus and Bobby have their worries too: Fergus is scared of cars, and Bobby was very upset after getting a blocked nose and not being able to smell. This surprised Hazel because she thought these animals wouldn’t experience the same feelings as her. The story then ends with Fergus and Bobby respectively telling her that she doesn’t need to be scared of them, which puts her at ease.
