Emily Young was proclaimed ' Britain s Greatest Living Stone Sculptor' by the Financial Times in 2013. After being born into a family of writers, artists and politicians, Emily started her career as a painter and developed a broad view of art whilst travelling widely in the 60s and 70s.
In the 1980 s, Emily began sculpturing, sourcing stone from all around the world. The sculptures present the natural beauty of the stone, such as monumental half-formed human heads holding silent expressions carved from imperfect material other sculptors might deem to difficult to shape. Emily describes the carving process as a two-way conversation, connecting with the material which often dates back millions of years.
