(1 Feb 2022) LUNAR NY PRAYERS AT HKONG'S POPULAR MAN MO TEMPLE
Crowds gathered at one of Hong Kong's popular temples, Man Mo Temple, to burn incense sticks and offer prayers for the Year of the Tiger on the first day of the Lunar New Year, amid concerns over the omicron variant.
Due to the fifth wave of the pandemic, Hong Kong's largest Taoist temple, Wong Tai Sin Temple, is closed to public on the first three days of Lunar New Year.
But throughout the city, smaller temples, like the Man Mo Temple, are still open to worshippers.
Hong Kong has seen a surge in coronavirus cases in January and leader Carrie Lam and health officials had urged the public to avoid large gatherings to prevent the spread of virus.
The city has tightened social distancing restrictions including dining-in ban after 6 p.m. and the closure of businesses such as bars, gyms and cinemas. Schools have suspended in-person classes.
People across Asia marked the Lunar New Year with muted celebrations, even as increasing vaccination rates raised hopes that the Year of the Tiger might bring life back closer to normal.
Each year is named after one of twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac in a repeating cycle. The Year of the Tiger follows the Year of the Ox.
