Описание: Transcript of Book Talk Narration

Book Talk presented by Suzanne Musema
How Dare the Sun Rise (memoirs of a war child)
By: Sandra Uwiringiyimana
Introduction:
How many of you think about your nose on a daily basis?
When Sandra Uwiringiyimana was young, her and her family used to flair up their nostrils when
they walked down the street so that they could blend in with other tribes.
Where she lived, her nose was considered criminal.
Summary of the Story
Nonfiction published in 2017
How Dare the Sun Rise tells the true story of Sandra Uwiringiyimana’s life starting at age 10,
living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It narrates how she survived the Gatumba
Massacre on the night of August 13, 2004, immigrated to America with her surviving family
members, and worked to overcome her traumatic past while simultaneously dealing with the
racial tension in the U.S.
Follow along as Sandra Uwiringiyimana embarks on a journey from the Democratic Republic of
Congo to the United States after the massacre of her refugee camp. Discover the discrimination
and cultural shock she experiences while living as a refugee in New York.
Why I recommend it
Sandra’s memoir is thought-provoking and tells the story of her survival, her experience as a
refugee and how she has found a way to impact the lives of many through her experiences.
Sandra Uwiringiyimana is the co-founder of Jimbere Fund, an organization that aims to revitalize
distressed communities in Congo.
Connection to Course
When asked about why she wrote the book, Sandra responded:
“I wrote this book because I was tired of outsiders always writing my history, my present, and
my future.”

The theme of self- identification from Patricia Collins Black Feminist Thought is present
thoughtout Sandra’s story.
In chapter five of Black Feminist Thought Collins states “By insisting on self-definition, Black
women question not only what has been said about African-American women, but the credibility
and the intentions of those possessing the power to define” (114).
How Dare the Sun Rise follows Sandra’s journey as she challenges the controlling images that
she has been branded with in order to reframe, for herself, what it means to be a black woman.
