In response to an urgent request from the Gujarat state government, the Indian Army launched a large-scale rescue and relief operation on Wednesday to aid flood-stricken areas across the state. Multiple Army columns were deployed across the most severely affected districts, working tirelessly to evacuate residents from perilous conditions.
The Indian Army's Golden Katar Division played a pivotal role in these efforts, particularly in Vadodara, where rising water levels posed significant challenges. "Indian Army flood relief teams of the Golden Katar Division continued their relentless rescue efforts, successfully navigating the dangerous waters in Vadodara. Their timely intervention saved more than 150 lives from inundated areas," the Army said in a post on X.
As Gujarat endured its fourth consecutive day of heavy rainfall, the situation became increasingly dire. Rain-related incidents claimed 19 more lives on Wednesday, raising the death toll to 26 over three days. Approximately 17,800 people were evacuated from flood-affected regions as the relentless downpour continued.
One of the most tragic incidents occurred near Dhavana village in Morbi district, where seven people were swept away while attempting to cross an overflowing causeway in a tractor trolley. Sadly, their bodies have since been recovered, according to a police official.
In Vadodara, despite a temporary respite from the rain, flooding persisted in many low-lying areas after the Vishwamitri River breached its banks. The floodwaters inundated residential neighborhoods, submerging buildings, roads, and vehicles, leaving many residents stranded.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for extremely heavy rains in isolated parts of Saurashtra on Thursday, adding to the concerns.
Rescue operations continued in Vadodara, where teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Army worked to evacuate people from their homes and rooftops to safer locations. Over 5,000 people were evacuated, and another 1,200 were rescued in Vadodara alone, according to Minister Rushikesh Patel.
To bolster the relief efforts, three additional Army columns, along with NDRF and SDRF units, were deployed in Vadodara on Wednesday. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed that cleaning equipment and disinfectants be deployed in the city as soon as the floodwaters recede. Municipal teams from Ahmedabad, Surat, Bharuch, and Anand have also been dispatched to assist in the cleanup operations.
In light of the ongoing crisis, the Chief Minister has ordered the deployment of five additional NDRF teams and four more Army columns to support rescue and relief efforts in Vadodara. Additional rescue boats have also been sent from Ahmedabad and Surat to aid the flood-affected city.
