Hey guys!
Oh look! I have green hair! :D (I know, it looks very teal on camera...)
Read below for fun details and story time! C:
For those of you who don't know, my last video (Periwinkle Fairy Makeup) was an experiment to see how well received it would be for me to create makeup designs based off original characters (of mine), while providing a little biography about them in the description. A lot of people seemed happy with the idea, so I decided I'd try a second look! This one is, obviously, based off the lovable yet frightening aquatic creatures -- mermaids!
Mermaids were such a huge part of my childhood and are one of my all time favorite fantasy creatures.
Now, sadly, this look is a bit incomplete and you'll have to use your imaginations a little to fill in the gaps.
I unfortunately did not have any shell tops or mermaid tails lying around the house in which to complete the overall effect. And, in the absence of a large body of water or any equally scenic backdrops, this had to be filmed in my slightly less majestic living room. So, just pretend like all of these things don't exist and instead have been replaced by elements befitting an awesome mermaid!
Ok, that's enough babbling.
It's time to introduce the second member of our newly constructed fantasy world; Nepha!
"Nepha is a salt-water mer who has made her home in the seaweed laden caves of the deep. She is of the genus "Icthus Unus", a species of mer known to be extremely reclusive and independent. Unlike some of their distant relatives who occupy coral reefs and warm tropical waters, these cave-dwelling mers do not travel in schools or pods.
Nepha is also a treasure hunter. She enjoys collecting baubles and trinkets that fall from the surface down to the reaches of her home.
She disdains sunlight and chooses to surface only during night time.
She is omnivorous, and can survive on a diet of vegetation, plankton, small crustaceans such as krill, or even small fish.
She is not classified as a siren, as Icthus Unus have never been known to display predatory behavior towards humans, are extremely reclusive and avoid interaction with most other species, and have irregular surfacing habits inconsistent with those of classified sirens."
The design: My personal interpretations of mermaids lean towards much more natural and simple looks. I am not a fan of the extreme uses of color, shimmer/sparkles, and extreme eye makeup that are somewhat popular of mermaid looks right now.
I do not believe these creatures would adhere to our beauty standards and rituals, so I tried to avoid heavy eye makeup and simply emphasize pre-existing features.
I am, however, totally game for the concept of scales existing elsewhere on the mer's body, and wanted to incorporate this into my look. In doing so though, I wanted to try to achieve a design which made the scales appear much more realistic. I decided to try to blend the tones of Nepha's scale into the tones of her skin. I used a combination of sea green and brown to try to make the transition appear more natural. I also used a combination of body paint and eye shadow to create a set of gills on her neck for breathing.
Edit: Look guys! Bronnie Rose Arnold from facebook drew a picture of Nepha!

Note: My tentacle earrings came from a seller named Hallder on Etsy. BUYER BEWARE! I personally would not recommend buying from this seller. My earrings were overpriced and cheaply made; they required a good deal of repair on my end in order for me to be able to wear them.
If you like the look of the earrings, I'd recommend trying a different store instead. I'm hoping to try to buy another pair in the future from a different seller, and if they turn out, I'll edit this post and link working alternatives. c:
Once again, feel free to leave feedback and tell me what you guys think! Also, if you have any suggestions or requests for a type of mythical/fantastical creature or concept you'd like me to try and recreate, feel free to leave me a note in the comments!
As always, I hope you guys enjoyed.
Thanks for watching,
See you next video! ♥
