Sometimes the best fishing trips don’t start at the boat launch - they start with a map, a backpack, and a question: “What’s out there?”
In this video, we join Vermont Fisheries Biologist Shawn Good as he sets out to hike and explore a small, "off the beaten path" pond to see what's there. No roads. No ramps. No crowds. But hopefully lots of hungry, eager fish that rarely, if ever, see a line or a lure.
Vermont is home to countless overlooked fishing gems tucked away on public lands like Wildlife Management Areas, State and Town Forests, and even the Green Mountain National Forest. To find them, all it takes is a little curiosity, some desktop research using satellite maps, and a willingness to explore.
This is the perfect opportunity to travel light and get back to the basics. A small tackle box with an assortment of simple lures (think topwater, inline spinners, small jigs), a lightweight rod, and some snacks is all you’ll need before heading into the wild. These waters offer adventure, solitude, surprise, and the chance to reconnect with the simple joy of fishing. Find a pond you’ve never fished before and see what surprises are waiting.
Explore. Cast. Repeat. You never know what you’re going to catch. That’s the spirit of fishing off the beaten path.
