On Tianlong Mountain in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China, there is a road hailed as a “tourist highway in the clouds.” A striking three-level spiral overpass along the route has amazed visitors from both China and abroad. Driving across this elevated bridge atop the rolling mountain peaks feels like riding a roller coaster. It has even sparked the imagination of many car enthusiasts online, both domestic and international, who dream of turning it into a racetrack to showcase their driving skills. Shrouded in drifting mist, the bridge appears and disappears among the clouds. Beyond its breathtaking design, the road also serves important functions in forest fire prevention and mountain flood control. As netizens put it, “China’s infrastructure experts not only have speed, strength, height, and technical mastery—but also imagination!”
The Tianlong Mountain Fire-Prevention Tourist Route stretches 30 kilometers in total, including four bridges, one tunnel, and extensive roadbed engineering. It is an important section of the Taiyuan Western Mountain Tourist Highway. Viewed from above, it resembles a flying dragon winding through steep mountain ridges. The road zigzags upward in sharp turns and sweeping curves. Because of its unique roller-coaster-like design, the overpass has unexpectedly become a popular “internet-famous” attraction, praised by netizens as the most beautiful “internet-famous road and bridge.”
Formerly known as Fangshan, Tianlong Mountain is a branch of the Lüliang Mountain range, with an elevation of 1,700 meters. Its emerald peaks stand like a natural screen, shaded by pine and cypress trees, with streams murmuring through mountain ravines and a pleasantly cool climate. As early as the Eastern Wei Dynasty, Gao Huan built a summer palace here. Later, during the Northern Qi Dynasty, Gao Yang constructed Tianlong Temple and commissioned the carving of grottoes. The mountain was named after the temple, and the temple became renowned for its grottoes. Since then, Tianlong Mountain has gained widespread fame. The Tianlong Mountain Grottoes have been listed as part of the fifth group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
However, for a long time, only a single winding mountain road led to the Tianlong Mountain scenic area. Due to years of neglect and severe deterioration—combined with steep slopes, sharp bends, and high elevations—the road posed significant traffic hazards. Inadequate forest fire access also presented potential safety risks.
The route alignment, bridge structure, and overall construction difficulty were rarely seen in Taiyuan’s road-building history. Remarkably, the entire reconstruction project was completed in just five months, with nearly 3,000 builders working tirelessly to construct bridges and pave roads. Built along the mountainside, the highway features numerous steep slopes, some reaching gradients of up to 40 degrees. To transport large equipment uphill, one loader had to pull from the front while another pushed from behind; some materials were even carried manually. Due to the complex terrain, the vertical elevation difference from the starting point to the end of the Tianlong Mountain road reaches 350 meters—equivalent to the height of a 116-story building, assuming an average residential floor height of 3 meters.

天龙山网红桥

天龙山防火旅游通道全长30公里，包括四座桥梁、一条隧道和路基工程，该通道为太原西山旅游公路的重要组成部分，高空俯瞰，犹如一条飞龙，盘旋在群山峻岭之间。道路呈之字形蜿蜒而上，左拐右旋。因造型独特宛如过山车，这座高架桥还意外成为了一个“网红景点”，被网民称为最美“网红路、网红桥”。
天龙山原名方山，属吕梁山脉分支，海拔1700米，屏峰黛立，松柏成荫，溪泉鸣涧，气候凉爽。早在东魏时，高欢在这里建了避暑宫，后来北齐高洋建了天龙寺，并都开凿了石窟。山因寺而得名，寺因窟而著称，从此天龙山声名大振，并且天龙山石窟已被列入第五批全国重点文物保护单位。但是，这里长期以来只有一条盘山路可以抵达天龙山景区，并且由于年久失修毁损严重，加之山高弯急坡陡，造成很大交通隐患，森林防火道路不畅也存在一定隐患。
道路选线、桥梁结构及整个施工技术难度，在太原市道路施工史上都属少见。整个改建工程只用了5个月，前后有近3000名建设者艰辛架桥铺路。公路依山而建，沿途有不少陡坡，有的坡度达40度。大型设备想上去，只能前面一台装载机拉拽，后面再用一台装载机推，甚至有些物料都是人工扛上去的。由于地形复杂，天龙山公路从起点到终点的垂直高低落差达350米。以一层居民楼3米的平均高度估算，这相当于116层楼的高度。
