Check out this fantastic pitch by David Martins! His research, titled "CrAssphage distribution analysis in an Amazon River based on metagenomic sequencing data and georeferencing," explores the use of CrAssphages as biomarkers for fecal contamination in water bodies.
Summary:
David's study used shotgun metagenomic analysis and georeferencing to evaluate CrAssphages' presence, diversity, and abundance in the Itacalunas River. The analysis identified 144 CrAssphage contigs, indicating unseen fecal contamination. The study also found new associations with Patescibacteria and 24 CrAssphages positively correlating with human population density, underscoring their potential as biomarkers for freshwater monitoring and treatment.
