Karl Johans gate is actually a combination of several older streets that used to be separate thoroughfares. The eastern section was part of Christian IV's original city near the ramparts surrounding the city, and after the ramparts were removed to make way for Oslo Cathedral, three separate sections eventually became Østre Gade.

The wider western section of the street was built during the 1840s as an avenue connecting the newly erected Norwegian Royal Palace with the rest of the city. In 1852, the street was renamed Karl Johans gate in honor of the recently deceased king.

Today, Karl Johans gate connects Oslo Central Station with the Royal Palace, and its route changes direction and width slightly at Egertorget, a square at the intersection of Karl Johans gate and Øvre Slottsgate. This square is the highest point on the street and offers views of both ends. The street is 1,020 metres long, with an additional 300 metres of direct extensions, Palace Hill and Palace Place.

To start our tour, we'll meet at the tiger statue in front of Oslo Central Station. From there, we'll walk towards the Royal Palace, where the current king of Norway resides. After taking in the regal surroundings, we'll turn and head towards the Norwegian parliament building.
