"Mockingbird" or sometimes called "Old-Time Mockingbird" or "Puncheon Camps" or "The Fiddler's Drunk and Can't Play," comes from Norman Edmonds, AKA Uncle Norm (b. 1889) of Wythe County, Virginia. Uncle Norm was one of the last masters of the older Hillsville/Galax region style of fiddling, he played his fiddle dropped down to his chest like how most Southern Appalachian fiddlers once did. His vast repertoire of tunes were mostly the ones that where known everywhere and are overly popular in todays age, sometimes called the "Standards," He learned the fiddle from his father, who in turn learned from his father, over a century of tradition passed down. But fortunately Uncle Norm remembered some of the older tunes, the more archaic and regionally strict ones that were once prominent in the pre-Civil War days, "Mockingbird" being one of them.
