Paytm is one of the most iconic payment company in India. It was the first introduction of mobile payment for many of us. But the journey of Paytm has not been easy. Mr. Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder of Paytm had to struggle and endure a lot in order to get Paytm where it is today. A child prodigy and a smart & strategic businessman, he has always been on the forefront of adopting new technology. Shifting from feature phone to smartphone, choosing payment as a service, launching India’s most popular e-wallet are some of the examples of his astuteness and his execution skills.
But with the launch of UPI, Paytm’s main business was disrupted and it lost its exclusivity through Paytm wallet. However, instead of chasing UPI customers, Paytm decided to shift its strategy. With the largest merchant base and one of the biggest consumer base, Paytm has become a one stop shop by adding multiple services. But the main growth and profitability will come when instead of distributing services, Paytm will start direct lending to both, merchants and consumers.
It will be interesting to see how Paytm will perform going froward as it is looking to go public on 8th November as India’s largest IPO of all time.
