We Are No Longer in the World of the 1990s: Global Geopolitical Shifts and Their Implications for Democracy and Myanmar’s Struggle

The world has changed profoundly since the 1990s. The liberal world order that shaped decades of international politics is gone — and no stable new equilibrium has emerged. We now live in a turbulent interregnum defined by geopolitical rivalries, technological control, kleptocratic alliances, fundamentalist movements, and declining democratic leverage.

In this lecture, we explore how these shifts reshape the global environment for democratic struggles — and what this means for Myanmar’s Spring Revolution.

Key themes include:

• The end of the liberal world order and the rise of instability.
• The decline of international intervention and the “myth” of the international community.
• The growing power and coordination of authoritarian and kleptocratic regimes.
• How technological advances now strengthen control more than freedom.
