Learn the dos and don’ts when forming and bending strip in FeCrAl / ferritic and NiCr / nichrome alloys for electric furnace heating elements. Kanthal’s experts Stephen Smee and Torbjörn Frankén walk you through how to form a Kanthal® AF strip for your electric heating element and how to check for element cracks or breakage.
In summary:
• Store your strips in room temperature.
• Always preheat Kanthal® and other FeCrAl alloy strips before forming them. This avoids any breakage.
• Preheat to about 200 degrees Celcius.
• Don’t forget to wear your safety gloves!
• Test the elements to make sure that there are no cracks.
• A crack will show up as a white spot.
