Alexander Suvorov (1729–1800) was one of Imperial Russia’s most celebrated commanders, famed for an almost mythic record of never losing a major battle. Rising through the ranks under Empress Catherine II, he distinguished himself in wars against the Ottoman Empire and in suppressing the Polish uprising of 1794. His campaigns emphasized speed, surprise, relentless offensive action, and rigorous training. He drilled his troops to move fast, endure hardship, and attack decisively—summed up in his blunt maxim: “Train hard, fight easy.”
In 1799, during the War of the Second Coalition against Revolutionary France, Suvorov led Russian and Austrian forces through northern Italy, defeating French armies in a string of sharp engagements. His daring retreat across the Swiss Alps—conducted under extreme conditions—cemented his legend. Eccentric, demanding, and intensely devoted to his soldiers, Suvorov fused discipline with audacity, leaving a military legacy that prized morale, momentum, and the offensive spirit above rigid formalism.
