Winds of winter blew the Patuxent Jazz Band back to River Hill High School for a concert featuring the works of Duke Ellington, most specifically his arrangement of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite (Op. 71)”. This major work is one of several reinterpretations of orchestral masterworks that the Ellington band undertook in the midcentury Jazz boom, further developing the artistic integrity of Jazz from a pop-music genre to one of careful composition and musical artistry. PJB pairs this incredible suite with an opening slate of Sir Duke’s popular and familiar charts for a concert full of the characteristic Ellington sound!

The Patuxent Jazz Band is an ensemble formed as the Columbia Big Band in October 2015. Our repertoire covers genres such as traditional Big Band, Bebop, Fusion, Swing and Latin, among others. We are members of the community who enjoy performing for all audiences. Though some members play and teach music professionally, the members are volunteers employed in a wide variety of professions who share a love of music. PJB is one of several bands within the Columbia Bands non-profit organization. The Patuxent Jazz Band hopes to bring the enjoyment of jazz music to a wide audience. We look forward to seeing you at our concerts!
