During the summer of 1967, Richard Carpenter performed at Disneyland with lyricist John Bettis as a banjo and piano duo. They played at Coke Corner on Main Street. They both fell in love with a waitress named Candy, and composed a song named after her.
When Karen and Richard began recording their third studio album, the lyrics to "Candy" were re-written and became the song "One Love." The track appeared on the B-side of their 1971 album "Carpenters." It was subsequently released as the B-side to their single "I Won't Last A Day Without You" in March 1974.
Listen to Karen on that last note - she holds it for two bars. Karen was 21 years old when she recorded "One Love."

ONE LOVE
(Music by Richard Carpenter, Lyrics by John Bettis)
One love in my young life
Took me somewhere I had never been
And I want to live again, breathe again
In the shelter of his brightly woven love song
So long I have wanted love to be
Sitting just this near to me
Now my waiting heart is free
Few are the choices we are given
The sands of time pass quickly by
One dream of my young life
Now stands holding out his hand to me
Now I can't help but believe that my whole life will be
Spent in one love
Few are the choices we are given
(Few are the choices we are given)
The sands of time pass quickly by
One dream of my young life
Now stands holding out his hand to me
Now I can't help but believe that my whole life will be
Spent in one love
(Spent in one love, spent in one love)
