These are called safety behaviors, things we do to feel safer in the moment, even if they don’t reduce real danger. Whether it’s avoiding eye contact in social situations, researching symptoms obsessively when we’re anxious about health, or always carrying a bottle of water during panic attacks, these habits create the illusion of control. But in reality, safety behaviors reinforce the idea that the world is unsafe and that anxiety is necessary for survival. In this video, we explore how safety behaviors are subtle forms of avoidance that fuel anxiety over time. You’ll learn how this concept applies across different anxiety disorders including panic disorder, social anxiety, health anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorder. Using cognitive behavioral therapy principles and a metaphor involving a magical alien-repelling rock, we unpack why behaviors that seem helpful may be making you more anxious and what to do instead. By understanding safety behaviors and how they function, you can begin to challenge the fear-based patterns that keep anxiety in place.
