LEADIN:
Orthodox Christians have celebrated Christmas Eve at churches in the UAE.
Worshippers at at Ethiopian church attended a five-hour service in Sharjah on Wednesday night.
STORYLINE:
Christmas Eve service is in full swing at this church in the UAE.
Ethiopian men and women are draped in white cloth for the festivities.
The congregation chants, sings and dances in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe was the son of God.
Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7 which follows the Julian calendar.
Services are also being held at Russian Orthodox Church and Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt churches within the UAE.
Tonight's celebration in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church lasts for five hours.
But the place of worship is full to capacity and hundreds of church goers are forced to gather outside the building to pray.
