Families describe dementia as a cruel monster which slowly robs them of their loved ones. It's not one specific disease, but a collection of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain. The risk of developing it increases with age.
At the same time, early onset dementia is also on the rise. Around the world, scientists are searching for a cure.
One optimstic Scottish professor has told us he thinks it could become a very rare condition in ten years' time.
Scotland Tonight examined what is being done to improve the lives of those impacted by a diagnosis of dementia.
