Arrival of the Three Kings at Portal de la Pau.

Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar arrived at Plaça del Portal de la Pau on the schooner at 4.30 pm, where they were welcomed by the Mayor, Jaume Collboni. He gave them bread and salt, symbols of hospitality, along with the magic key that opens all homes.

Later, at 6 pm, the Parade began, following the same route as previous years. Set designers, choreographers, musicians, dancers and artists from all over the city joined forces to create a spectacular parade combining cutting-edge technology with dazzling displays of local talent and creativity.

A magical welcome: Stars, letters and dummies

The parade kicked off with a welcome from Els Brincadeira, accompanied by a new entourage with flags. Decked out in sound-activated lights, when they played their music became visible! This magical welcome was followed by the float carrying the Page Estel, accompanied by her entourage, with a host of stars performing a choreography inspired by the music of the planets.

On the Post Office float, the royal couriers collected children’s letters. This year the float featured five new bicycles and letterboxes created by set designer Carles Berga. Two pedalling pairs of legs brought a giant letterbox created by José Menchero. Isabel Joaniquet redesigned some of the elements of the royal couriers’ costumes, while Brodas Bros created the choreography.

In the new Dummies section, Gregori, the city page, and his entourage of Dummies were accompanied by the Xanquers (stilt walkers) from the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, dancing to music composed by Xavi Oró.

Melchior brings the magic of toys

Next came the parade of King Melchior’s entourage, accompanied by the pages, banners and dancers of the Centre de Dansa de Catalunya (CDC), who created the choreography.

New features this year included a toy float by set designer Ramón de los Heros in the shape of a colourful toy train to transport the toys for children. We saw lots of dancers interacting with the movable parts of the float in a choreography by Som-Hi Dansa.

King Gaspar and dreams that arrive by bicycle

Next, King Gaspar’s float recreated the mystery and myth of his origins. This king and the new banners, designed by Marc Salicrú, brought a visual journey in which the dancers, the Three Kings Parade choreography team and the costumes recreated the essence of the East.

Since many children would have been dreaming of bicycles, King Gaspar was accompanied by a new entourage inspired by dreams that came riding in on bicycles: Barcelona i el Tour, un bon tàndem, (Barcelona and the Tour, a good tandem), created and designed by Barbarana Pons with set design by Ramon de los Heros, coordination by Skate and staging by Montse Ginesta. Bernardo Rojas composed the music, which included a bicycle dance by the Three Kings Parade choreography team and the XL BMX school.

Balthasar and the music of the continent of rhythms

African culture inspired King Balthasar’s new double float, which rang out with instruments from African cultures. With a giant djembé on the float, it filled the streets of Barcelona with music by a DJ, the rhythm of percussionists and dance. The Tambedou family were in charge of the music and festivities in a collaboration between Roseland Musical and the Senegalese company Kay Feech, led by Anna Mbengue.

The entourage accompanying Balthasar and his new float included huge three-metre-tall animal-shaped puppets crafted by Hoekwil artist Roger Titley, world-famous for his giant creatures.

A spectacular parade ending with a dance of sweets

The last floats carried coal and sweets for everyone. We could hear live music by Guillem Albà, based on an original work by composer José Manuel Pagán. Irene Pallarés directed the choreography, and the candy dance entourage with the Page Omar featured new music by Arturo Calvo.

The royal entourage set off at 6 pm and made its way from Av. Marquès de l’Argentera (at Pg. de la Circumval·lació) to the Magic Fountain in Montjuïc. The schedule was:
