Descriptions:
I apologize if any of the facts here are not 100% accurate. I googled most of these myself, but I cannot claim that these are all true facts. Please comment below for anything I should correct, thank you!
Basically, this song is about the wonders of the Silla Kingdom and looking back on those memories. Many of the things that people may not know about are things that were unique or special about the Silla Kingdom. Silla was one of the 3 kingdoms of ancient Korea.
1. Bulguksa temple: The temple is considered a masterpiece of the golden age of Buddhist art in the Silla kingdom. The building was completed in 774 by the Silla royal court and given its current name Bulguksa. It was built on the slopes of Mt. Tohamsan at the ancient Silla capital of Geumseong.
2. The literal translation here is to stop your footsteps, but that seemed awkward and the nuance disappears. This sentence is closer to when you stop someone on the road to ask for directions. You want them to stop for a moment to ask or show them something, but afterwards they will carry on what they were doing. Sorry, nuances are hard to explain.
3. Mt. Geumo has a very beautiful landscape and was found within the Silla Kingdom. There are 3 representative Buddhist monuments found upon this mountain. Another interesting fact was that if you looked carefully at the mountain you could see the Hanja character for king (王) and a person lying down with their hands folded over their chest.
4. Hwarangdo: They are also known as the Flowering Knights, which were an elite warrior group of male youth in the Silla Kingdom. They were also known for their beauty and use of cosmetics/accessories. The Hwarangs were taught military arts, culture, arts, religion, etc. The arts were equally as important as fighting techniques in this group. The group’s purpose was to prepare these young men to become well rounded elite members of society. Many famous military generals and political figures came from Hwarang roots.
Hwarangs were required to follow a code of 5 rules: loyalty to the king, filial love toward one’s parents, fidelity in friendship, bravery in battle, and chivalry in warfare. They also had a purpose as shamanic leaders that prayed for the safety and security of the Silla Kingdom. I have also been told that this was a way for the King to control the elite of the Kingdom from revolting or rebelling by threatening their sons that were in the Hwarang.
5. Thousand year sovereignty: The Silla Kingdom lasted from 57 BC to 935 CE, very close to 1000 years.
