While working at the intersection of molecular biology and protein analysis, ‪@uw-milwaukee‬ Professor of Physics, Ionel Popa noticed a major gap: DNA purification is fast and streamlined, but antibody purification remains slow and complex.

That insight led to the ‪@uwmresearchfoundation‬ patent pending innovation: a new method for producing protein-based materials with ultra-large pores — forming the basis of high-performance antibody-binding columns. Our prototype outperforms current purification methods in speed, specificity, and binding capacity.

These columns are compatible with standard benchtop centrifuges, making them ideal for research labs — and with broader potential to transform how biopharma companies purify therapeutic antibodies, which now represent the largest segment of the drug market.
