Big News: Supreme Court Executes Right to Die with Dignity in India | Shubham Sisodiya
Shubham Sisodiya Current Affairs
India’s Supreme Court has delivered a significant judgment related to the Right to Die with Dignity, allowing passive euthanasia in a specific case involving a man who had been in a permanent vegetative state for over a decade. The Court permitted the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment after medical boards confirmed that there was no possibility of recovery.
The case involved Harish Rana, who suffered severe brain injuries after a fall in 2013 and remained in a persistent vegetative state for around 13 years. Acting on a plea filed by his father and based on medical evaluations, the Supreme Court allowed the withdrawal of life support, applying the principles laid down in earlier rulings on passive euthanasia.
The concept of euthanasia has been debated in India for years. In 2018, the Supreme Court recognised the “Right to Die with Dignity” as part of Article 21 (Right to Life) and allowed passive euthanasia under strict safeguards, including living wills and medical board approval.
In this video, we will understand:
What is euthanasia?
Difference between active and passive euthanasia
Supreme Court’s latest ruling
Earlier landmark cases like Aruna Shanbaug (2011) and Common Cause (2018)
Ethical and legal debates around the right to die
This topic is extremely important for UPSC Prelims, Mains (GS-2, GS-4 Ethics), and essay preparation.
