Across the world, coastal communities are on the frontlines of climate change. Rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and declining fish stocks are placing increasing pressure on both ecosystems and livelihoods. In Ghana’s Volta Region, communities like New Kedzi are experiencing these challenges firsthand, as mangrove degradation, unsustainable fishing practices, and inefficient fish smoking methods accelerate environmental loss and weaken local resilience.
In this video, we highlight the Coastal Resilience and Sustainable Livelihood Initiative (CRESLI) by Green Growth Africa, which works closely with the New Kedzi community to promote energy-efficient fish smoking technologies that reduce fuelwood consumption and carbon emissions. The initiative also supports alternative climate-smart livelihoods to diversify household incomes and leads mangrove restoration efforts to strengthen coastal protection, enhance biodiversity, and improve long-term community resilience.
This story showcases how community-driven, nature-based solutions can protect coastal ecosystems while empowering local livelihoods in the face of climate change.
