The Nocturne No.20 in C sharp minor, op.posth, sometimes also called “Reminiscene”, is composed by Frederic Chopin in 1830, and published in 1870, 21 years after his death. The piece is dedicated to his older sister, Ludwika Chopin.
The piece was played by Holocoust survivor Natalia Karp for the Nazi concentration camp commandant Aman Goeth, being so impressed with the rendition that he spared Karp’s life. This was also the piece played by another Holocaust survivor and famed Polish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman, the central figure of the 2002 Roman Polanski film, The Pianist. Years later Szpilman played this piece for German army officer Wilm Hosenfeld upon their first meeting, in which he later helped Szpilman hide and provided food to him in the last months of the war.
Chopin was a leading Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era who wrote primarily for solo piano. He maintained an often troubled relationship with the French writer Amantine Dupin, known by her pen name, George Sand. For most of his life, Chopin was in poor health and died in Paris at the young age of 39. His piano writing was technically demanding and expanded the limits of the instrument, his own performances noted for their nuance and sensitivity.
Chopin emigrates to France in 1831, and remained in Paris till the end of his life, although he remains patriotic as a Polish expatriate. He seldom performed publicly in Paris and prefered the private salons (the social gatherings of the aristocracy and artistic and literary elite) and his own Paris apartment for small group of friends, earning his income mainly from publishing his works and teaching piano to affluent students all over Europe.
Chopin took the new salon genre of the nocturne invented by the Irish composer John Field, to a deeper level of sophistication. The 21 nocturnes are more structured, and of greater emotional depth, than Field’s. In which many of the middle sections marked by agitated expression and heightens their dramatic character.
Chopin’s life and romantic tribulations have been fictionalized in numerous films, one of them a German silent film “Nocturno der liebe (1919), with his music serving as a backdrop.
This piece is also in my album, Je t’aime, that is available now on major digital platforms, such as Spotify and Apple music.
