The features of diary writing include first person, past tense, paragraphs, observations, thoughts and feelings, date and introduction for each entry, chronological order, detail and description, emotive language and time conjunctions.

It's important children explore these features as a class before writing their final diary entry you could do this by giving children an example of a diary entry and asking them to find and highlight the features of a text or you could do a shared write session where the teacher and the whole class create a diary entry together.
