Welcome to an Exciting Journey as we Embark on our 3-day Adventure in the charming city of Cartagena in Colombia.
Join us as we explore this captivating destination and share our experiences on a couple travel."
Get Prepared to Travel
First, check all visa requirements to travel to Colombia. The tropical climate here makes it an inviting destination year-round. However, we recommend visiting during the dry season from December to April for sun-soaked days and balmy nights.
Choosing your hotel wisely is vital. Cartagena offers a variety of neighborhoods to stay in, each with its unique charm. You may choose between Bocagrande, the Historical Center, or Getsemani. The main differences are that Bocagrande offers modern amenities and beaches, while the Historical Center and Getsemani provide a more authentic experience with historic architecture.
However, it's worth noting that some older hotels may not have hot water, so it's essential to confirm this before booking.
We decided to stay in Getsemani, since it is close to the Historical Center, with more convenient prices, and a morel authentic experience than Bocagrande.
Best Sights to Visit in Town
You can't miss the grandeur of Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a fortress that stands as a testament to the city's fortifications.
Next, we went in the captivating beauty of the Palacio de la Inquisición and the iconic Clock Tower.
A stroll through the cobbled streets of Cartagena will lead you to the whimsical world of Fernando Botero's sculptures. Fernando Botero was a Medellin-born artist known for his bronze sculptures of over-sized objects, usually people, and sometimes cats.
Don´t forget to take a drink or a beer, and enjoy the amazing sunset in Baluarte del Reducto, in Getsemani.
Totumo Mud Volcano
For an extraordinary adventure, you can venture to the nearby Totumo Mud Volcano, about an hour away from Cartagena. This natural wonder offers you the chance to immerse yourself in therapeutic mud baths, believed to have healing properties, and then cleanse yourself in the nearby river.
Local Food
Exploring Cartagena's culinary scene is a delightful journey. From the hearty Bandeja Paisa to the tangy ceviche, every bite is an exploration of Colombia's rich gastronomic heritage.
Be sure to savor the arepas, empanadas, and mango with salt, beloved street food that’s sure to delight. And don’t forget to try the amazing Colombian fruit ice creams, especially during a late afternoon walk inside the old city walls.
Beaches Around
To experience the beautiful beaches around Cartagena, we recommend escaping to the nearby Rosario Islands. We chose the Baru island. There, you'll find crystalline waters and powdery sands, perfect for snorkeling to explore the vibrant underwater world. It will take you around 2 hours on boat to reach Baru from Cartagena.
If you're up for an adventure, consider heading to Playa Blanca, which is about an hour's drive away. However, keep in mind that there may be long lines to cross the river on your way back, and it may get risky on night, so plan accordingly.
Conclusion
Cartagena promises a tapestry of memories that will stay with you forever. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, this city offers an unforgettable experience that you'll cherish for a lifetime.
