The love story behind this classic is between two nobles who were in courtship despite the plans of the elders of the princess who was betrothed to a different prince. The two were enjoying a typical Suva Friday night in the Suva Town Hall in the 40's, during WW2, when two Military Police approached them and handed a written order from the Army camp , signed by JVS, that the young prince has to immediately report to barracks, pack his stuff and head for the Suva Wharf to join a batch of soldiers scheduled to leave for the Solomon Islands that very night. With few seconds to spare, the princess took off the scarf (sikavu) from her neck and garlanded the prince
who then out of reflex just reached into his pocket for his military ID (yaloyalo) and handed it in exchange to the lady. The song records the young man's nostalgia.
