Ukrainian Medical Professionals Visit Hawaii Pacific Health Medical Centers

Описание: Five medical professionals from Ukraine learned about trauma rehabilitation and burn treatment at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children and Straub Medical Center.

The specialty care techniques shared by Hawai‘i Pacific Health professionals and other Hawai‘i medical experts will help the delegation treat people wounded in the war and prepare for Ukraine’s future medical needs.

“People become physicians to help others,” said Dr. James Ham, Straub Medical Center Emergency Medicine physician. Ham is a member of the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset, which helped organize and host the delegation. “Whether you're a physician at Straub or a physician in Ukraine, you're there to help and this is one way we can actually help other physicians halfway across the world.”

Dr. Kateryna Zinovieva, a physical and rehabilitation physician in Ukraine, said her team used to work mostly with patients who had stroke and spinal cord injuries. Since the war began, they have treated many people hurt in rocket attacks.

“We have different types of civilian patients. We have children, teenagers and adults. A lot of children don’t have parents because they were killed.”

At the Straub Burn Unit, the Ukraine doctors, physical therapist and media specialist learned about the intricacies of treating burn victims. At Kapi‘olani, they discussed managing pain and rehabilitation for children.

The visit is the result of a partnership between the Congressional Office for International Leadership’s Open World program, the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset and Hawai‘i’s District 5000 Rotarians.
