The “new” Acropolis Museum opened to the public in June 2009.
It was built to house every artifact found on the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens.
The Museum lies over the ruins of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.
More than 4,250 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres.
A design competition was won by New York–based Bernard Tschumi, in collaboration with the Greek architect Michael Photiadis.
Excavation has revealed layers of modest houses and workshops, from the early Byzantine era and the classical era.
Foundation pillars reach down to the underlying bedrock and float on roller bearings.
The 48 columns in the Parthenon hall mark the outline of the ancient temple and form a colonnade for the display of the Parthenon marbles.
A sculpture by Michael Rakowitz’s, from his ongoing series The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist.
