In men's singles, Joo beat Jun Mizutani 4-2 in the quarterfinal and then lost to Xu Xin 0-4 in the semifinal. In men's team matches, Joo destroyed Jaber Al-Balhan from Kuwait with 3-0 in the second round of group stage and then defeated Chen Feng from Singapore with 3-0 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, South Korea again faced their old rival Chinese Taipei. Joo Sae-hyuk won Chen Chien-an 3-0 easily and then controlled the match against Chuang Chih-yuan, winning him by 3-1. In the final, Joo met Ma Long who was the world's number one at that time. Together, they started a classic and breathtaking battle between offense and defense at world's top level.
