Bridge Histories:
Ouse Bridge: The oldest bridge in York, Ouse Bridge has been a crucial river crossing since medieval times, dating back to the 12th century. It has been rebuilt several times, with the current structure dating from the early 19th century, and remains a busy crossing connecting York’s historic city center.
Skeldergate Bridge: Completed in 1881, Skeldergate Bridge was designed to connect the city center with South Bank and Fulford areas. Originally a toll bridge, it has a beautiful Victorian design and once featured a swing mechanism to allow river traffic through, though it no longer opens.
Millennium Bridge: The newest bridge in York, the Millennium Bridge was completed in 2001 as part of a project to improve cycle and pedestrian access. With its sleek, modern design and elegant arch, it provides a lovely walking and cycling route over the Ouse.
