Hello everyone!
Today we’ll show you how to use cones when aligning the boring bar before line boring.
If the bore is not heavily worn — up to about 2 mm, or as in our case, only slightly worn, you can use alignment cones to position the boring bar on the axis before repair.
Some technicians use cones even in more severe cases — that’s a personal choice — but we usually prefer centering kits, which we’ll show in our next video.
So, let’s begin.
First, insert the boring bar into the bore.
Then mount the cones on the bar and tighten them so they fit firmly against the bore walls.
Next, measure the distance from the edge of the bar to the nearest axis or reference point on the component — on both sides of the bar.
This helps confirm that the bar is straight and symmetrically aligned.
Additionally, we use a digital level to check parallelism.
The component and the boring bar must be parallel to each other.
Once you’ve confirmed that everything is aligned, prepare the supports.
Clean the surfaces and bolts thoroughly — the welding area must be flat and free of paint or rust.
Now install the supports and tack weld them in two points.
After that, tighten the bolts on the supports and weld them around approximately 25–30% of their circumference.
Important: weld from the side where it will be easier to cut the bolts off later after the repair is complete.
That’s it — a simple, fast, and reliable method for setting up the boring bar using cones.
If the bore is more worn or deformed, use a centering kit — we’ll show how to do that in the next video.
