Join me on a trek high above East Trimmer Springs Road as we scout the rugged ridgelines overlooking the northern reaches of Pine Flat Lake. This terrain offers a brutal but beautiful perspective on some of the lake’s most secluded spots, including Lawless Cove, Russian Charley Creek, and Zebe Cove.
Beyond the views, this landscape holds the ghosts of California’s industrial past. We’re standing in the footsteps of the Kings River Lumber Co. and the Sanger Lumber Co. In the 1880s, this area was a hive of activity, featuring a massive V-flume system that transported lumber from the high Sierras down to the valley floor—an engineering marvel of its time.
We also look back at the more recent transformation of this canyon. Between 1947 and 1954, the US Army Corps of Engineers surveyed and constructed the Pine Flat Dam, a project that forever altered the flow of the Kings River and created the reservoir we see today.
In this video, I’ll take you through the steep terrain and show you exactly how these historical markers align with the modern-day geography of the lake.
