In a historic milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, the region has been directly linked by passenger train for the first time, as Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the extended Jammu Tawi–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. The new service now connects Jammu directly with the Kashmir Valley through a seamless rail corridor, marking a major leap in all-weather transport, tourism and trade.

For decades, travelling between Jammu and Srinagar depended largely on road transport through the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which frequently faced disruptions due to snowfall, landslides and bad weather. With the launch of the new passenger service, travellers can now reach Kashmir comfortably by train.

Jammu Becomes Main Gateway to Kashmir

Jammu Tawi Railway Station has emerged as the key rail gateway to Jammu and Kashmir. Already connected to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and southern India, the station now offers direct access to Srinagar through the Vande Bharat service.

Passengers from almost any part of India can now reach Jammu by train and continue onward to Kashmir with only one interchange at Jammu Tawi.

The Railway Minister described the development as a major milestone in expanding rail connectivity in the Union Territory.

Vande Bharat Expanded from 8 to 20 Coaches

The Vande Bharat service on the corridor was first inaugurated by Narendra Modi in June last year. Initially introduced with an 8-coach rake, the train reportedly witnessed full occupancy and strong demand since launch.

To meet rising passenger numbers, Indian Railways has now increased capacity to 20 coaches, significantly enhancing seat availability on the route.

Officials said the upgraded service would help pilgrims, tourists, local residents and business travellers who have increasingly preferred the fast and modern train.

Big Relief for Pilgrims and Tourists

The new direct connectivity is expected to greatly benefit pilgrims travelling to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and those planning onward journeys to Amarnath Yatra routes through Kashmir.

Tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir will also gain from a faster and more scenic rail option. Travellers can now board at Jammu and ride through tunnels, mountain landscapes and iconic bridges before reaching Srinagar.

Railway officials said the direct train would improve access to destinations such as Dal Lake, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Train Designed for Harsh Winters

The Railway Minister said the Vande Bharat train operating on the route has been specially designed for difficult climatic conditions, including sub-zero temperatures.

The train features advanced heating systems, weather-resistant components and modern semiconductor-based electronics to ensure reliable operations even during harsh winters, when road connectivity often becomes difficult.

This all-weather rail access is expected to become a lifeline during snowfall periods.

Kashmir Economy Gets Boost

The minister highlighted that improved railway connectivity is already strengthening the economy of the Valley.

According to him, nearly 2 crore kilograms of apples have been transported from Kashmir to markets across the country through the railway network.

Apart from apples, railways are also helping move:

Cement
Foodgrains
Fertilizers
Salt
Milk and dairy products
Cherries and horticulture produce

Officials said better logistics have helped reduce transport costs. Cement prices in the Valley have reportedly fallen by around ₹50 per bag due to cheaper inward movement through rail.

The improved freight system is also expected to help artisans and traders dealing in Pashmina shawls, carpets, dry fruits and handicrafts.

More Projects in Pipeline

The Railway Minister said infrastructure development in the region would continue. He announced that railway line capacity is being expanded in the Kashmir Valley and multitracking work is underway on the Ambala-Jammu route.

He added that new rail links to Poonch and Rajouri, along with the Uri-Baramulla extension, are in planning and DPR stages.

New Era for Jammu and Kashmir

The launch of direct passenger rail service between Jammu and Srinagar is being seen as a transformative moment for the region.

With faster travel, stronger supply chains, easier pilgrimages, better tourism access and dependable all-weather transport, the new Vande Bharat service is expected to bring long-term economic and social benefits to Jammu and Kashmir.
