In this video, we give an overview of how CAPS (Cleaved Amplified Polymorphic Sequence) markers are screened, as an example of a form of marker assisted selection (MAS) can be used in plant breeding.
An understanding of the genetic basis of important traits allows breeders to determine which individuals in a breeding program have the greatest potential. In many cases, these methods reduce the need for extensive trialing and improve the strength and accuracy of selection. Ultimately, this leads to plants or other organisms that use resources more efficiently.
