Sustainable Cultivated silk
Eri Silk Fibre
Silk is a natural protein fibre, and Eri silkworm is naturally produced by the Eri silk moth, scientific name "Samia Ricini".
Eri is silk spun from open-ended cocoons, which means they are open mouthed and cannot be reeled, but are spun like cotton.
Excellent textile properties
Eri silk has certain excellent textile properties, which are unique in may respects such as fineness, density,
cross sectional shape, surface properties, which play on important role in determining the end use of the fibre.
Eri silk is finer than Muga and Tasar, and softer than Mulberry.
Thermal properties
Eri is the softest and warmest among all the silks and posses excellent thermal properties
and offers tremendous blending possbilities with other natural fibres like wool, cotton, and linen.
Ideal Self-Sufficiency Production
Similar to the native Mulberry silkworms, Thai Eri silkworms can produce generation after generation
This is in contrast to the hybrid and foreign varieties of Mulberry silkworms, which can only reproduce for multiple generations.
A Small Water Footprint
Eri silk fibre is technically a waste in itself. After the worm becomes a moth, no additional resources are spent by nature in its making,
apart from helping a life transition into another version of itself.
100% of the cocoon can be used to make yarns and, in turn, fabrics. It is in fact nature's very way of teaching us up-cycling.
Thailand's Eri Sericulture
Thai Eri silkworms are reared using cassava leaves(also called tapioca),one of Thailand's most important agricultural products.
The production of root, used principally as an edible starch, occupies more than 1.5 million hectares in Thailand.
However,Thai cassava farmers remain facing low income and poverty.Eri Sericulture give cassava farmers new opportunities
to bring in addition income from the production of Eri Silk in textiles
Kongkiat Thai eri Silk Community Freindly Project
Create work and bring income to Thai Cassava famers
Since 2016, We have been working seriously growing Thai Eri Community Friendly project. Kongkiat has worked actively
with Thai researchers at Centre for Excellence in Silk, Kasetsart University for many years, in hope to develop regional natural textile material.
The aim is to introduce and promote fine quality of Thai Eri Silk to the world, make it possible to create "Sustainable Cultivated Silk",using non-involved pesticides, chemical-free natural finest material, and make Eri Sericulture, a household activity to bring in additional income for cassava farmers in Thailand, in wish genuinely to help them from poverty.
