Chapel of the Cristo Yacente (Recumbent Christ)
"The chapel is covered by a star-shaped vault, polychrome in vivid colors. The gilded keystones are decorated with floral motifs, with the anagram of Mary in the central keystone.
The altarpiece, made in the mid-17th century, is the work of a Segovian assembler who followed in the footsteps of Pedro de la Torre. It is of a gigantic order and consists of a bench, a main body flanked by two pairs of columns, and an attic. The central space is filled with a large canvas of the Descent from the Cross, and in the attic is another of Calvary (Christ, the Virgin, and Saint John) with the figure of Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross. On either side of this painting are two carvings representing Saints Peter and Paul. In the intercolumns, on brackets, are two angels, one carrying the crown of thorns and the other the cloth of Veronica."
The image of the Recumbent Christ is a baroque sculpture of the XVII century, made by Gregorio Fernandez
Gregorio Fernández, Castilian sculptor, made this dying figure of Jesus between 1628 and 1631
"The sculptor, to add realism to the work, used technique of great drama and pathos for the hairpieces, with the placement of glass eyes, ivory on the teeth, bull horn on the nails, resin for the drops of water that come out of the sore on the side or cork and leather for the stigmas."
