Ffestiniog Power Station is a pumped storage hydro electric power station. Like a battery, it stores electricity when grid demand is low, and provides power to the grid when demand is high.
When grid demand is low, water is electrically pumped by the turbines up to the top reservoir. When demand is high, the valves are opened that allows water to flow from the top reservoir, through the turbines, to the bottom reservoir, thus generating about 360MW for short periods of a few hours.
