If people believe they can make a success of their life by ignoring God, or if they believe that what God has said in the Bible is irrelevant or of low importance, or if they live for themselves instead of for God and others, they are Deceived and Blind.
Students plan their path to future success and happiness. Employees and business people look for the path to their best outcomes. People plan and save and work their way toward their desired goals. People chase relationships with those they believe will make them happy. And most of them do it from their own value system, with the best of their own ideas, following their own sense of what is right and best.
I keep reminding people that the way that seems perfectly good to them is the road to their destruction.
“There is a way that seems right to a man but it leads to death.” Proverbs 14:12
That’s because people are Deceived and Blind. I’m sorry about how offensive and arrogant that sounds, but it’s a tragic reality.
The fool is convinced there is no God.
“The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, and have done abominable works. There is none who does good.” Psalm 14:1
All those otherwise intelligent, respectable, well-paid, nice looking people who live as if God does not exist are acting like fools. That means they are Deceived and Blind.
All those people living by the world’s morals, violating God’s holy standards, are Deceived and Blind. All those people who think they know what is best for themselves are Deceived and Blind. All those who push God out of their world and thinking, even if they believe in Him, are Deceived and Blind.
So, many people around us, despite their education, qualifications, achievements, wealth and social standing are living lives from a position of being Deceived and Blind.
They are collecting things of little value while trashing things of great value, chasing temporary things and ignoring the eternal blessings of God, loving the world instead of loving God, pleasing and serving self instead of living for God and blessing others. They are excusing things that destroy them instead of living in freedom, enslaved to Satan’s kingdom of darkness instead of living in the light, enslaved by sin instead of empowered to righteousness.
At the same time these people take pride in their foolishness, showing off their wealth as if it is of true and lasting value, enjoying their standing among men while unable to stand before God, displaying their intellect while their very life value is foolish.
Like animals they serve their lust and pride, while masking those selfish motivations with a veneer of civility and nobility. They cannot see themselves for who they are and what they have become and they despise those who live outside their selfish value system.
Even those of us who know and love God are touched by many of these deceptions and blind spots. People we regard as spiritual are exposed when they confront God. Fleshly selfishness is seen against God’s holiness so people collapse in God’s presence and repent.
“When Simon Peter saw it, he collapsed at Jesus' feet, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Luke 5:8
“Then I said, Woe is me, for I am ruined, for I am a man of unclean lips living among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” Isaiah 6:5
“Because of the vision I am overcome with anguish and I have no strength. How can I, your servant, speak with you, my lord? Now I have no strength, and there is no breath in me.” Daniel 10:16,17
So the problem of being Deceived and Blind is not just for those who reject God, but on all of us who live in this world, continually seduced by this world’s way of looking at things, as if God is not there.
We are constantly tempted to look at things from our own perspective, from the world’s value system and under satan’s seductive lies.
Friends look at the world and yourself, your attitudes and values, and the very reasons you do what you do, with careful humility. You need to have God’s Word and God’s wisdom injected into you. You need to be open to the Holy Spirit’s prompting, so you can recognise where you are being kept from God’s best by the enemy’s lies, tricks and traps.
May you, with open heart before God be completely free from being Deceived and Blind.
