London’s Metropolitan Police officers were responding to reports of a stabbing in a residential street in Hainault, east London in April 2024 - but the events that unfolded that morning were more extreme than they could have ever imagined.

After using a van as a weapon to hit a pedestrian and crashing into the front garden of a house, Marcus Monzo set out on a frenzied attack with a samurai sword. Monzo randomly attacked members of the public during his rampage including the senseless murder of 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, who was just on his way to school that morning when Monzo randomly attacked him.

Police officers arrived at the scene with limited information but immediately confronted Monzo, bravely putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the public - and each other.

In this video one of the first responders, Inspector Campbell, reflects on the events of that fateful day, the selfless actions of officers who put their lives on the line and the injuries he sustained confronting Monzo.

You will see the incredible moment Inspector Campbell confronted the attacker with his police baton as colleagues deployed their PAVA incapacitant spray. As the attacker went to flee through gardens and alleyways, officers bravely pursued him, deployed a Taser and made the arrest.

Monzo has since been convicted of murder, attempted murder and other serious offences and has been sentenced to a minimum term of 40 years in prison.
